| Immigration | I was told by my Aunt Ellen that her grandfather, my great grandfather, Cornelius, met his wife, Margaret Cosgrove, on the ship from Ireland. I had found a ships passenger list on www.Castlegarden.com with a Cornelius Corcoran born the same year coming from Ireland and landing in New York on 5 Jul. 1849. I had thought that this was my great grandfather, it wasn't. I had professional researchers find a Cornelius Corcoran traveling with a Margaret Cosgrove on a ship from Ireland to the US landing in Philadelphia 27 Nov 1853. It would have been one of the last of the famine ships. Patrick Corcoran |

| Death | Cornelius Corcoran was born in Ireland. He married Margaret Cosgrove and together they had seven children. He died suddenly in the newspaper article below. Daily Local News, April 18, 1895 Cornelius Corcoran, aged 65 years, a resident of Glen Mills, was found dead in the road near his home about four o'clock yesterday afternoon. Beside him was his team which he had driven to Chester in the morning to secure a load of Truck, and on the way home, after he had sold he greater part of his load, as it is supposed, a fatal accident occurred. Must Have Fallen His head was cut, and near it was lying a stone on which there was hair, as though the man had been thrown from his wagon and had been struck on the head with the stone. The horse was standing quietly at the side of the road, nibbling the first blades of early grass, apparently unconscious that there was any trouble, though the animal had slipped his halter while awaiting for some one to come and take him in charge. An Inquest This Morning No reason other than that of accident could be assigned for the death, as the unfortunate man is described as being of peaceable disposition and having no enemies. However, Coroner Quimby, of Media, was notified, and he held an inquest this morning. Grief Stricken Family When the news of the death was taken to the family there was much expression of grief, for the mother has been dead for some time and the children felt the warmest attachment for their father. They are as follows: Patrick, Joseph, John and Thomas, Annie, wife of Daniel Leary, Oxford, and Mary, wife of Patrick Murphy, Glen Mills. Funeral On Saturday This morning Patrick, the eldest son, came to West Chester to make arrangements for the funeral, which will be held on Saturday, though as yet the hour has not been fixed. Daily Local News, April 19, 1895 Yesterday the jury empaneled (sic) by Coroner Quinby (sic), of Media, after hearing evidence regarding the death of Cornelius Corchran (sic), of Glen Mills, renderee (sic) a verdict to the effect that the cause was a fractured skull which the unfortunate man received in a fall from his wagon. Several witnesses were heard by the jury, of which David J. Foulk, of West Chester, was Forman. There was no evidence to show that there was any suspicion of foul play in the matter, consequently it was decided that a mishap, while driving home, was the reason for the sad death. Corcoran was 69 years of age. Daily Local News, April 19, 1895 Corcoran- On the 17th instant, Cornelius Corcoran, aged 69 years. The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral on Saturday, at 7:30 a.m. from his late residence, Glen Mills, Delaware County, Pa. Interment at Oakland Cemetery. |
